What is the process for transferring a domain name? Print

Domain name transfers are not a real-time process. For the security of all domain name owners, the transfer process requires you to confirm the transfer by acknowledging email sent to the Administrative Contact email address as listed at your current registrar.

Check the WHOIS record to verify that you can respond to email sent to the Administrative Contact email address.

The process for transferring a domain is as follows:

  1. Place your order online at http://www.rackshare.com/domain/. If you have previously registered or successfully transferred a domain name you may use our Bulk Transfer service.
  2. You will soon receive an email at your current Admin Contact email address. This email will ask you to confirm the transfer with Rackshare and our registrar (Tucows OpenSRS) by visiting a web page. An example of our Transfer Request message is below. You must confirm the transfer within 5 days.
  3. Once you have confirmed the message in the previous step, Rackshare will directly request that the current registrar transfer the domain name. Once the current registrar receives our request, they may - at their discretion - request additional confirmation from you before allowing the transfer. Network Solutions, for example, requires you to confirm the transfer by acknowledging an email sent to the current Admin Contact. An example of the Network Solutions registrar's message is below.
  4. If the current registrar accepts Rackshare's transfer request, your domain name will become part of our management system and you will be able to manage and renew your domain name through Rackshare.

Example of Transfer Request Email

A request has been received to transfer the domain example.com to the registrar
Tucows. This request was entered at Wed Jan 10 19:49:29 2001

This acknowledgement of transfer will be processed by Tucows Inc, an
ICANN accredited registrar on behalf of Rackshare. If this is a valid
request and you wish to approve this transfer, please visit the following
url and follow the instructions:

https://rr-n1-tor.opensrs.net/transfers/index.cgi?rid=2747

You will need to enter the following information to complete the transfer:

	Domain Name: example.com
	Password: 6PzqVAmiGV

If you do not wish to approve this transfer, simply ignore this message and
the request will be cancelled.

Accepting this transfer will change the registrar of record for your domain
from its current registrar, to Tucows/OpenSRS; it may also change some of
the contact information. If you are receiving this email, you should have
initiated, or at least been aware of this request already. If this is the
first time that you've heard of this, do not accept the transfer until you
are satisfied that the request is legitimate.

Thank you.
